ARTICLE SUMMARY
This article outlines how you sharing a file or folder alters its article permissions. Additionally, you can find the steps to edit permissions in this article.
This came up in regards to the public folder on the COMMONS site. There is a library with a main folder and then subfolders underneath it. When someone shared the main public folder, it altered the security on the rest of the objects (so basically everything in the library).
For instance, if someone like Jennifer Janzen, who has edit permissions for the site only, had read only permissions and when she went to try and share things out, the option to share anonymously was greyed.
After talking with Microsoft, we added Jennifer to the folder manually and gave her EDIT permissions. We did this for my test account and it solved the issue.
Instructions
- Go to the folder,
- Click on the three dots and click on manage,
- Then, go to advanced and manage the permissions from there.
Apparently, just using the share icon is against best practice as this is how it will break inheritance. Going the other way will allow you better control over the security of the object.
